Ice hockey is heading for the biggest indoor arena in Scotland. This December, Glasgow Clan will take the Motorpoint Elite League to the OVO Hydro for the first time, with three games played over two days as the city counts down to the new year.

The event, called Ice Hockey at the Hydro, brings together all three of Scotland's professional teams, Glasgow Clan, Dundee Stars and Fife Flyers, along with Belfast Giants, the reigning Elite League champions. The Clan usually play at Braehead Arena, where they regularly sell out fixtures, so the move gives the Purple Army a festive night out on a much bigger stage.

The action starts on Wednesday 30 December, when Dundee Stars take on Fife Flyers at 3pm. Glasgow Clan then face Belfast Giants at 7.30pm. On Hogmanay, Thursday 31 December, the Clan meet Dundee Stars at 3pm, with new silverware on the line to round off the two days.

For the first time, the ice will sit in the middle of the Hydro arena, with a capacity of around 8,000 fans for each game. The Clan describe it as ice hockey on a massive scale, and the club is pitching it as a great day out for lifelong supporters, families and anyone looking for something different to do over the festive period.

Russ Smith, chief executive of Braehead Arena and Glasgow Clan, said: "This is about growing the sport as a whole, giving our supporters the opportunity to watch their team in Scotland's biggest arena and welcoming new fans." He added that hockey is renowned for being open to all, with a real family feel.

Debbie McWilliams, chief commercial officer of the SEC, which includes the OVO Hydro, said bringing ice hockey to the arena for the first time was a significant addition to a strong year of sport at the venue. She described the Clan, Stars and Flyers as having passionate and committed fanbases.

Local partners are getting behind the event too. Motorpoint Glasgow, the car retailer on Hamilton Road in Mount Vernon, is title sponsor, so the games are billed as Motorpoint Glasgow Presents: Ice Hockey at the Hydro. Radisson RED Glasgow on Finnieston Quay, a short walk from the arena, is the official hotel partner, with 174 bedrooms, the OUIBar + KTCHN restaurant and the RED Sky Bar looking out over the Clyde.

Clan season ticket holders were able to claim a Hydro seat as part of their season ticket before tickets went on general sale. With the club calling it one of the highlights of Glasgow's festive calendar, it could be the perfect way to see out 2026, whether you are a regular at Braehead or watching your very first game.
