Glasgow Science Centre celebrates 25 years on the Clyde

Glasgow Science Centre has been celebrating a big birthday. The quayside attraction, funded by the Millennium Commission, first opened its doors in 2001 and has since welcomed more than six million visitors to engage with science in innovative and accessible ways.
To mark its 25th year, the centre thanked its closest neighbours with a free weekend in March 2026 for residents of the G51 postcode, which covers the Govan area. They enjoyed full access to the Science Mall, home to hundreds of interactive exhibits, live demonstrations and family science experiences.
Chief executive Dr Stephen Breslin said the centre would not be what it is today without the support of the people and community groups it works with in G51. The team believes that science is for everyone, he said, and that everyone should have the chance to take part in science and STEM learning in ways that matter to them.
The anniversary celebrations also included a special adults-only Science Lates: Timewarp evening, which transformed the building into a retro-futuristic playground. Guests could play classic arcade games, take on a measurement-themed escape room, learn about the fossils of Glasgow's Fossil Grove in Victoria Park and revisit favourite exhibits from the centre's early days, sharing ideas that might help shape its next 25 years.
Throughout the year, the centre has kept families busy with Easter trails, fiery science shows, IMAX films and seasonal events. This winter, visitors can journey through the stars in the Planetarium on a festive space adventure and meet Santa.
Spooky season brings The Witch's Lair, a night of spooky stories, magical science and hands-on Halloween adventures for all ages, showing how the centre keeps finding new ways to make science fun.
As a registered Scottish charity, Glasgow Science Centre's mission is to engage and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to discover and enjoy science, including outreach work with young people and communities across Scotland.
For regular visitors, a Science Passport membership offers unlimited access to the Science Mall for a year.
Glasgow Science Centre is on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow. Tickets, events and memberships are at glasgowsciencecentre.org.
