The Argyll Arcade remains Glasgow's sparkling jewellery quarter

For nearly two centuries, couples have walked beneath the glass roof of the Argyll Arcade to choose engagement rings, and it remains one of the most famous shopping destinations in Glasgow. The arcade describes itself as Glasgow's jewellery quarter, with more than 30 jewellers and diamond merchants under one roof.
The L-shaped arcade was built in 1827 in the Parisian style, cut through old tenements to link Argyle Street with Buchanan Street. It is one of Europe's oldest covered shopping arcades and Scotland's first ever indoor shopping mall.
The building was A-listed in 1970 in recognition of its national architectural and historic importance. It is a fine and little-altered example of early Victorian architecture, notable for its use of cast iron, with the glass roof supported by ornate hammer-beam trusses. It was designed by architect John Baird, whose other Glasgow work included the Prince's Buildings on Buchanan Street and buildings on the University of Glasgow's Gilmorehill campus.
Baird's style drew on Greek and Roman architecture, and his early Glasgow work included Greyfriars United Presbyterian Church in North Albion Street and the central town house of Claremont Terrace. The arcade's retailers page notes that only the very best luxury watch, diamond and jewellery specialists are given the privilege of trading beneath its roof.
Today the arcade offers what it calls the largest and finest selection of diamond rings, diamond jewellery, wedding rings and luxury watches in a single location in Scotland. It is widely regarded as the diamond jewellery centre of the north.
Retailers include names such as Chisholm Hunter, Bernstones, Barclays Diamonds and Austen Blake, among many others, each specialising in jewellery, diamonds or watches.
Whether shoppers are looking for a gift, treating themselves or simply window shopping, the arcade's glittering windows make it one of the most atmospheric walks in the city centre.
Visitors are advised to contact each retailer directly about availability and opening times.
