Vera brings a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant to Strathbungo

Glasgow's Southside has welcomed a new independent restaurant. Vera, which takes its name from the Latin for 'true', opened on Nithsdale Road near Strathbungo in September 2026, with a promise to be a relaxed place to eat well, drink well and feel at home.
The kitchen is led by chef Zak Young, whose previous experience includes two of the city's most celebrated restaurants, Cail Bruich and Unalome. At Vera, he is cooking Mediterranean-influenced modern food built around high-quality seasonal produce and what the team calls thoughtful and uncomplicated cooking.
The opening menu mixed familiar flavours with a sprinkling of surprise. Starters included aged beef tartare with anchovy dressing and bitter leaf, sea bream ceviche with grape nahm jim and coriander, and focaccia with whipped tofu and XO sauce. Mains included St Brides chicken with sweetcorn and cherry, cod with fig leaf and preserved tomato, and linguine with Arbroath smokie and horseradish.
Desserts were designed with sharing in mind, including barbecued lemon ice cream with pickled lemon and olive oil, and a dark chocolate choux bun with vanilla and pistachio. The drinks list covers wines alongside cocktails, beers and after-dinner serves.
The founding team has been clear that Vera is not meant to be a special occasion restaurant. They want it to become part of people's week, somewhere you can decide at five o'clock that you fancy dinner, pop in for a glass of wine and something to eat, or end up staying all night.
The Southside's food and drink scene was a big part of the decision to open here. The team said the area already has an incredible independent food and drink scene, and that was a huge part of why they wanted Vera to be there.
The menu will keep moving with the seasons, with new dishes regularly coming out of the kitchen, but the philosophy will stay the same: great produce, big flavours and food the team genuinely loves eating themselves. Ultimately, they say, they want people living around the Southside to feel that Vera is their restaurant.
It is a welcome addition to the streets around Strathbungo and Shawlands, where independent openings continue to give the neighbourhood its character.
